Westside Weekender: September 21-23

Autumnal equinox in Marina del Rey /via Flickr @stonebird
"Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he [or she] who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night."
- Hal Borland

The lingering 80-degree weather may not have you believe it, but the autumnal equinox graces us this weekend, so soak up the sweater-free weather while you still can!

Friday: Sylvia Plath & City Tavern

"So come, and slowly we will walk through green gardens
and marvel at this strange and sweet world."

Venice: Head down to Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center for a discussion with local poet, Carlyle Archibeque, who will "attempt to separate Plath's brilliant writing from the drama and controversy that still surround her death."  $7 general admission; $5 students and seniors.  Starts at 7:30pm.

Runs September 20-30

Culver City: Can't wait for Oktoberfest?  Never fear!  City Tavern will host a different barrel-aged beer and gastropub-grub pairing each night through the end of the month.  Tonight they feature Bear Republic's Tartare, with the fare TBD.

Saturday: Septemberfest & Giant Robot

Santa Monica:  Celebrate the autumnal equinox in the most debaucherous way possible.  Septemberfest will feature over 150 beers for your drinking pleasure, as well as food trucks to help soak up  all the suds.  Live music, lederhosen optional.  2:00pm-6:00pm.  General admission is $40, but if you're super rich VIP is $50.

DOWNTOWN LA**:  Although outside the geographical scope of the Westside, Giant Robot's opening reception at the Japanese American National Museum brings Sawtelle (aka Little Osaka) to Little Tokyo for its third joint show.  The exhibition features the artwork of eight emerging artists and arcade machines running the new indie video game, Catburger.  Oh, and there will be a "haunted maze."  6:00pm-10:00pm and admission is free.

Sunday: Beauty of the Barrel (Yes, More Beer)

Santa Monica:  LA craft beer enthusiasts from Brew Something LA join forces with The Victorian for an afternoon of barrel-aged beer and barrel-aged spirits from various breweries and distillers.  Don't worry, you don't have to feel bad about giving in to more inebriated shenanigans - the net proceeds of this event benefit The Virginia Avenue Project, a local charity that provides free after and in-school programs using the arts and one-on-one mentoring.   4:00pm-8:00pm and $40 admission.
