Westside Weekender: September 14-16

FRIDAY: Open Jaus & Wood-Fired Pizza

[pronounced "house"]

Sawtelle: Concrete Walls Projects & JAUS present the opening of "Case Study Los Angeles II: On the Perimeter" from 6:30pm-9:30pm.  The collaborative installment is the second to investigate "what it means to be influenced by living and working in the 'City of Angels.'"  The nine LA artists of this exhibit experiment with the various perimeters of the city, both real and virtual.

Branzino Crudo: peaches + avocado + cucumber + mint

Santa Monica: After feeding your eyes, head over to nearby Milo & Olive - my absolute favorite default eatery right now - for a languorous dinner.  Everything I've tried here has been fabulous, whether it's brunch, dinner, dessert or coffee.  Some may call the service slow, but that's its charm: the waiters don't rush you to turn over the table.  Definitely start with the garlic knot, dangerous though it is.  Anything after that should be regarded delicious serendipity, though I'm partial to the marinated eggplant app and pork belly sausage pizza.  Whatever you choose, linger over every morsel.  Sip on a cool drink or two, like the grapefruit sparkler, and get some dessert even though if you're full (because what the hell, right?).  The kitchen is pretty much a stage, so sit at the counter if you can.  Then again, the communal dining experience also has the allure of unexpected conversations with strangers.

And a little Westside trivia for you: the talented team behind this place also run Sweet Rose Creamery (<3), Huckleberry (<3 <3) and Rustic Canyon (still haven't been there, my bad).

SATURDAY: wild Up & Poolside

wild Up: Modern Music Collective

Westwood: Solo pianist Richard Valitutto, of the Hammer Museum's 24-member residency orchestra, wild Upwill perform Inner Child, Old Soul, "a program of solo works for toy piano" at 3:00pm in the courtyard.  While you're there, make sure to grab a bite from Ammo, the new cafe which offers seasonal/local/farmers market fare, from sandwiches and paninis to soups and salads.

Brentwood: Finally!  (I've been looking forward to this for a while.)  Poolside will perform at the Getty for Saturdays off the 405, from 6:00pm-9:00pm.  Take in the sunset, peruse the exhibits - especially Klimt's The Magic of Line, which closes next Sunday - and wander the gardens before grabbing a drink and soaking up a melodious DJ set.

SUNDAY: Step Brothers & White Wash

Santa Monica: The documentary, White Wash, which explores the history of African Americans and water culture, will be screened at the Santa Monica Public Library at 2:00pm.  The showing is loosely tied with Saturday's Coastal Cleanup in Santa Monica and the EarthFest L.A. 2012 concert in Culver City.

Prestige Worldwide...or maybe just in Venice

Venice:  Catch Gallery 1988's four year anniversary tribute to Step Brothers before it closes next weekend!  A hub for pop-culture artwork, the gallery features emerging artists and sells much of it at emerging appreciator prices.  Why not start your collection with Rich Pellegrino's giclee print of "Good Housekeeping.  No Question."?
