Getty Villa: Last Days of Pompeii Opens Today

The new apocalyptic exhibit now on display at the Getty Villa "addresses the potent legacy of the ancient city of Pompeii in the modern imagination."  The 79 A.D. volcanic eruption at Mount Vesuvius demolished the city and neighboring villages while simultaneously preserving them under 13 to 20 feet of ash and pumice.

Following its rediscovery in the early 1700s, the venerable catastrophic imagery has provided artists a canvas for addressing modern issues such as "sexual identity, psychoanalysis, the nuclear threat, collective memory and the nature of art."  As such the exhibit mostly features work by artists from the last three centuries, including Dali, Rothko and Warhol (Mount Vesuvius, 1985, above), though some ancient pieces are also on display.
