Westside Weekender: October 12-14

FRIDAY: Sausage & Eruptions

Sawtelle: Let's get our priorities straight, Westsiders: make sausage, not war.  That's the slogan of the recently opened Seoul Sausage, a delicious passion project to create "a new way to eat Korean BBQ."  Not that there's anything wrong with the old way, but where else can you go when craving Korean Fried Chicken with Kimchi Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread?  While you're savoring that meat, feast your eyes on the mesmerizing mural by John Park.

Malibu: Then grab a warm blanket or two and head up PCH for an outdoor screening of the 1913 version of The Last Days of Pompeii at the Getty Villa.  Amble through the galleries, grab a glass of the prosecco-and-pear Getty Bellini, and dive into a warm chocolate lava cake (obviously) before settling down for the show.  Composer Michael Mortilla will provide live musical accompaniment to the silent film.  Starts at 7:30pm; parking is $10 after 5:00pm and screening tickets are $7 .

SATURDAY: Arts & Letters

Santa Monica:  Take a gander into the Santa Monica Art Studios, which opens its doors from 6:00pm-9:00pm to the work spaces of 34 resident artists.  Peruse paintings, sculpture, photography, printmaking, installations and mixed media works, which all happen to be available for purchase as well.

Westwood: In the mood for iambic pentameter?  Or perhaps some free verse?  Then you don't want to miss the Festival of California Poets at the Hammer.   Three acclaimed Gold Coast poets will read some of their own works, as well as poems by other famed California wordsmiths.  Starts at 7:30pm; entry is free; parking is $3 under the museum after 6:oopm.

SUNDAY:

Westwood:  Swing by the Hammer again for a walkthrough of their new exhibition, Graphic Design: Now in Production, which looks at the evolution of graphic design over the past decade and showcases "recent developments in the field, such as the entrepreneurial nature of designer-produced goods; the renaissance in digital typeface design; the storytelling potential of titling sequences for film and television; and the transformation of raw data into compelling information narratives."  Starts at 2:00pm; $10 general admission.

Venice:  If you've got the dough, treat yourself to Taste of Abbott Kinney, a $60 walking tour of mouth-watering fare.  A ticket buys you bites at participating restaurants, as well as wine and beer tastings.  Event is 4:30pm-6:30pm.
