LA's Hammer (and Sickle)

Surely by now you've seen one of the colorful "MADE IN L.A. 2012" streetlight banners around the city.  It's the Hammer's "first large-scale biennial survey of the work of Los Angeles-based artists."

The local-phile exhibition, which runs through August, showcases the work of 60 artists across the city: the Hammer Museum in Westwood, LA><ART in Culver City, and the L.A. Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park in Los Feliz.  (Plus one weekend in Venice Beach.)

Tomorrow evening the Hammer kicks off its Thursday night outdoor music series with Hammer Bash!  KCRW DJs Jason Bentley and Jeremy Sole will spin sets reflecting the sounds of the city and the spirit of Made in L.A.

Performers lit up the Hammer Museum's outdoor courtyard last Friday night with Benzel's interpretation of Esquire's 1967 spread of Sharon Tate, "A Beginner's Guide to Mao Tse-Tung."

The event will also feature Scott Benzel's performance piece, (Threnody) A Beginner's Guide to Mao Tse-tung--for 2 tape loops, dancers, cello, viola, violin and percussion.  Eerie music plays as female dancers roam the stage, maintaining tension between tape loops using props like those featured in the Esquire spread that (Threnody) examines.

Esquire editors spiced up Chairman Mao's "extremely dull and entirely unmemorable" Little Red Book by propping Sharon Tate alongside guerrilla weaponry.
